Heart Helpers
Ingredients for a Healthy Heart
Cardiovascular disease in on the rise, this can be partly credited to the fact that often times cholesterol tests are used to indicate heart health. However, blood pressure and inflammation are also important factors in determining cardiovascular fitness. Cholesterol, inflammation and blood pressure can be reduced by participating in these heart helpers:
-
Hone in on Hormones – Testosterone and Estrogen levels can impact the flexibility of blood vessels and blood pressure. Hormones affect individuals differently, therefore it is important to know side effects and options when taking medications that may impact your hormone levels. Blood pressure should be monitored and discussed with a family physician so that you are aware of individual risks.
- Sleep Soundly – Individuals who sleep 5 or less hours a night have a greater risk of heart disease than those who get 8 hours of shut-eye. Sleep enables your body to repair damaged cells and tissues.
- Read Results – Most people engage in yearly checkups and once finished simply mark it off as one of their yearly tasks. Read the results of your tests; know what is normal for you. Do not simply let the doctor or nurse run his/her tests and send you on your way. Inquire what the normal readings are for weight, blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose levels, etc and then monitor your tests yearly for changes and improvements.
- Pump up with Potassium – People only get half the potassium they need daily. This mineral works to regulate the water and sodium balance in the body which normalizes blood pressure. Some foods pumped with potassium are halibut, tomatoes, and bananas.
- Munch on Magnesium – Consuming magnesium reduces the risk of inflammation. Magnesium fights free radicals which may attack tissues, the heart, or blood vessels. Spinach and peanut butter are excellent sources of magnesium.
