New Year's Resolution Success

Tips on Keeping Your New Year’s Resolutions

1.) Do Not Make Drastic Changes
Many people think that on the 1st they will begin eating a perfect diet or begin exercising rigorously and consistently right off the bat. Then when they slip up one time, a snow ball effect occurs and they end up giving up on their goals all together. Instead, make a resolution to do “better” in certain areas. It is okay to set specific goals but make the goals attainable. Instead of, “I will workout 5 times a week”, try, “I will exercise for 30 minutes at least 3 times per week”. If you do more than that, then great! If not, you will not be as inclined to give up all together.

2.) Concentrate on One or Two Resolutions
Focus on one or two resolutions. Making more than this is just over doing it. Eating healthy, exercising more, going to church every Sunday, and being a better spouse are all good things to aim for but try to focus on one or two. This will avoid overload and prevent discouragement.

3.) Expect Hiccups
I can promise you that you will at some point mess up on your resolutions. Whether it be from skipping a week of working out or overeating at Taco Bell, sooner or later something will cause you to stray from your goals. If you expect this and realize that this is natural, it will be easier to get back up on that horse and keep going. One of the major reasons why people do not complete their goals is their failure to handle hiccups well. Get back on track as soon as possible!
