It is hard enough trying to eat healthy at home. Eating healthy on vacation is extremely hard. Leaving behind your busy and stressful life in lieu of a vacation for a couple of weeks can tempt you to overindulge. With a little bit of planning and determination, your vacation doesn't have to turn into a junk food wonderland.
Plane TripIf the airline does happen to still offer snacks, most likely they aren't very healthy. They can be loaded with fat and sodium which can leave you feeling bloated. Instead, visit your local grocery store and buy a few healthy snacks to take on the plane. You can buy healthy trail mix, fruit, whole grain crackers, etc. Avoid overly salty snacks. While on the plane drink a bottle of water to stay well hydrated.
Car TripTry to only eat at rest areas. Since taking a break every two hours to stretch your legs is recommended, try to eat at this time as well. Pack healthy meals and snacks to take along with you to eat while you get some fresh air. Try to stay away from rest area vending machines and restaurants. If you absolutely have to eat at a fast food place, try to choose healthier options such as salads or sandwiches with chicken. During your ride, it is also important to drink plenty of water. Drinking water will keep you hydrated and help fight off the munchies.
Visiting Attractions and Site SeeingThis can be a difficult time to eat healthy. Bad food seems to be everywhere, especially at amusement parks and tourist attractions. When you arrive at your vacation destination, try to visit a grocery store to stock up on healthy snacks. Buy fruit, crackers, and anything portable that you can take with you while you are out and about. If you feel the urge to indulge, eat something you brought with you first. Don't completely eliminate all bad foods. After all, you are on vacation. Just make sure you make eating these foods a treat and not a normal part of your vacation.
